Celebrating Bats: The Forest’s Unsung Heroes

Bat Appreciation Day | April 17

Today, on Bat Appreciation Day, we’re celebrating some of our most important — and often overlooked — forest dwellers: bats. These nocturnal creatures play a vital role in healthy forest ecosystems, and forests, in turn, are essential for their survival.

Forests provide bats with the shelter they need to thrive. Many species roost in tree cavities, under loose bark, or in the foliage of mature trees. Dead or dying trees, called snags, are especially important — offering safe spaces for resting and raising young, called pups.

Bats also rely on forest habitats for food. Insectivorous bats can consume thousands of mosquitoes, moths, and beetles each night. By doing so, they protect trees and are a vital part of supporting the health and balance of the forest ecosystem.

But bat populations are under threat — from habitat loss, disease, and climate change. Protecting and restoring forests is one of the best ways we can support them. That means preserving old-growth trees, planting diverse native species, and maintaining connected natural landscapes.

At Remembrance Forest, we believe that every tree planted is a step toward a richer, more vibrant ecosystem. This Bat Appreciation Day, we honor the quiet work of bats and the forests they call home.
