Celebrating Bats: The Forest’s Unsung Heroes
Bat Appreciation Day | April 17
Today, on Bat Appreciation Day, we’re celebrating some of our most important, and often overlooked, forest dwellers... bats! These nocturnal creatures play a vital role in healthy forest ecosystems, and forests, in turn, are essential for their survival.
Forests provide bats with the shelter they need to thrive. Many bat species roost in tree cavities, under loose bark, or in the foliage of mature trees. Dead or dying trees, called snags, are especially important since they offer safe spaces for resting and raising young bats, called pups.
Bats also rely on forest habitats for food. Insectivorous bats can consume thousands of mosquitoes, moths, and beetles each night! With such an appetite, they are a vital part of supporting the health and balance of the forest ecosystem.

But unfortunately, bat populations are under threat from habitat loss, disease, and climate change. Protecting and restoring forests is one of the best ways we can support them. As good stewards, we can preserve old-growth and mature forests, plant diverse native species, and maintain connected natural landscapes.
At Remembrance Forest, we believe that every tree planted is a meaningful step toward a richer, more vibrant ecosystem. This Bat Appreciation Day, we honor the quiet work of bats and the forests they call home.
