A Dazzling Small Tree
That Supports Wildlife

Redbuds are an extremely popular small tree for good reason.  Their dazzling rose-purple flowers light up the forest with color and are a favorite springtime highlight for many.  The flowers are a welcome sight to other species as well, serving as an important early nectar source for pollinators like bees and butterflies.  When the rest of the forest still appears barren and has not yet awakened after winter, redbuds play a critical role for those species that need food at that time.

Planted ornamentally since at least 1641, the redbud’s large, heart-shaped leaves offer ample shade for much of the year, and its branches are frequently used for bird nests.  A widespread native tree, redbuds grow naturally in open woodlands as well as mature forests.

In autumn, redbud fruit pods are produced in abundance, often hanging from branches by the hundreds.  They are eaten by many species, including quail, cardinals, deer, squirrels, and turkeys.

Redbuds symbolize renewal and new beginnings because of their vibrant early spring blooms.  Additionally, their heart-shaped leaves evoke feelings of love and connection.

Why Choose a Redbud?

  • Symbol of love and renewal – Redbuds are among the first trees to bloom in early spring, symbolizing renewal and hope

  • Striking spring color – Covered in vibrant pink-purple blossoms that appear directly along the branches, redbuds create a stunning and unforgettable seasonal display

  • Supports wildlife – An important early nectar source for native bees and other pollinators, with seeds that later provide food for birds and small mammals

  • Perfect understory tree – A small, graceful native tree that thrives beneath taller canopies, adding beauty and ecological value to the forest year after year
